Our goal as a community of global researchers is to create a model that preserves the rich and diverse scholarly communications landscape that includes libraries, journals, societies, publishers, and intermediaries of all sizes.
That model – based on subscribe-to-open principles – provides to academic libraries a simple and straightforward means of achieving open access, based on best practices that are rooted in existing resources, journals, and processes.
To pilot this model, Libraria is working with the publisher Berghahn Books to move 13 Berghahn anthropology titles to open access for 2020.
Other academic publishers, as well as scholarly societies and research funders, are watching this pilot to see if it might be a feasible route to open access for subscription journals.
If it works, a further step is to have research funders directly support the open access publication of the research they sponsor.
